Tally splits a restaurant check into exact shares. The host uses the Tally app, listed on the App Store as TallySplit. Guests don’t need the app or an account.

Creating your account

Hosting a check needs a Tally account, created with Sign in with Apple. The first time you open Tally it shows you how splitting works, asks you to accept a short acknowledgment about receipt accuracy, and then creates the account. It takes a minute and happens once.

Guests need none of this. If someone sent you a link, open it: the check is there, with nothing to install and nothing to sign in to.

Signing in on another iPhone, or after reinstalling

Tap Sign in with Apple on the first screen. Your account, including how many of your included checks you have used, comes back with it, and the introduction is not shown again. Your name comes from your iCloud Keychain if you have it on. If your name is nowhere — not from Apple, not on this iPhone, not in iCloud Keychain — Tally asks once what guests should call you.

Hosting a check

Open Tally and tap Host a check. Scan the receipt or type it in, check the lines against the receipt, add the people at the table, and choose how to split. If you leave the app partway through, Home offers the check back where you left it.

Sending links to guests

Choose Everyone claims on their phone. Each guest gets their own link and their own 8-character code. Text each person their own link: it opens their place on the check, so it shouldn’t be forwarded. A guest can open the link in any browser, or type the code in the Tally app under Join a check. While claiming, each guest sees everyone’s status and their own running total, but not anyone else’s amount. Once everyone has claimed, tap Lock and tally, and each guest sees what they owe. After that, mark each guest paid as they pay you back. When everyone is paid the check is settled, and guest links say so. Tally doesn’t handle the payments themselves.

A link or code that stops working

A shared check lasts 24 hours from when it was created. It also ends when the host closes it, or changes the check after sharing it. Either way the old links and codes stop working, and the host can share the check again to send new ones.

Private Checks

If the host made it a Private Check, you’ll be asked for a passphrase before you can see anything. Only the host can give it to you. Hosts turn it on under Private Check on the Send links screen, after choosing Everyone claims on their phone.

Tally Pro and your included checks

Your first three checks are included. A check counts as one of them when you confirm how it is being split, and only once: changing the split method, sharing the check or coming back to it doesn’t count again, and scanning, reviewing or abandoning a check counts for nothing. After the three are used, starting a new check normally needs Tally Pro. Tally Pro is a subscription meant to come in monthly and annual plans, but not every plan may be offered to you, and the App Store decides which can be bought. Before you subscribe, the App Store shows you the price in your currency. If the App Store has no Tally Pro plan to sell you, Tally lets you start the check without Tally Pro. That doesn’t apply when you’re offline or the App Store isn’t responding. Guests never pay, and joining someone else’s check never uses your included checks.

  • Apple bills and manages Tally Pro. Tally never receives your card or bank details.
  • On a new iPhone, or after reinstalling, tap Restore purchases on the Account screen.
  • To cancel, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you may keep Tally Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel a subscription, and neither does deleting your Tally account.

What your account holds

Account, then Your account data, shows a summary of what your account holds, and the Privacy Policy lists all of it. No receipts, no names, no check contents. The same screen has Manage subscription, which opens Apple’s own settings, and Delete account, which are different things.

Deleting your data

Delete account asks Tally’s server to delete your account. It is separate from Manage subscription and does not cancel an Apple subscription. Your name stays, on this iPhone and in iCloud Keychain, so signing in again recognizes you. Delete all Tally data removes your name, saved checks, the check you’re in the middle of, and links to checks you joined from this iPhone. It does not reset this iPhone’s finished-check count. If you are signed in, it also asks Tally’s server to delete your account. It is offered on the Account screen, and on the first screen if you are signed out. To remove just the check you’re in the middle of, use Discard check on Home; to remove a check you joined, use Leave this check. The Privacy Policy explains what each one covers.
